It’s a very interesting and profound distinction! Often, people confuse the two because they appear similar, but their origin and purpose are very different.
Here is how to differentiate between natural gifts (what are called “innate gifts”) and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The “Raw” Gifts (Natural Gifts / Talents)
These are abilities with which you were born or that you developed through learning and practice.
Origin: They are part of your genetic heritage or personality from birth. We often talk about “innate talent.”
Usage: They can be used for anything (work, leisure, helping others, or for one’s own glory).
Examples: A beautiful voice for singing, an ease with mathematics, a natural leadership, a talent for painting or sports.
Characteristic: They improve through practice and study. A great pianist has a “raw” talent, but he must work for hours to polish it.
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit (Spiritual Gifts) These are supernatural abilities given by God to believers for a specific mission.
Origin: They are not innate. They are given by the Holy Spirit at a certain moment (often after a conversion or to meet a spiritual need).
Usage: They are exclusively intended for the “edification” (to help and build up) of the community and to manifest the power of God.
Examples (according to the Bible, particularly 1 Corinthians 12): The word of wisdom, the gift of healing, prophecy, speaking in tongues, the discernment of spirits.
Characteristic: They do not depend on the person’s intelligence or talent, but on the will of God. A person can be naturally shy but receive a powerful gift of prophecy.
The most beautiful thing is when a raw gift is “consecrated” and becomes a channel for the spiritual gift.
Example: Someone who has a natural talent for speech (raw gift) can see that talent transformed by the Holy Spirit to become a spiritual teacher who deeply touches hearts.
May the Lord bless you!
